Ban on night hiking in the Tatra Mountains during winter

The TPN has announced that from this Sunday, February 1, a ban on night hiking in the Tatra Mountains during the winter season will come into force. This means that tourists will not be able to hike on the trails from dusk to dawn, as is the case during the summer season.

Until now, night hiking in the Tatra Mountains was prohibited only during the summer. In winter, such trips were formally allowed, although rescue services and the national park had previously appealed for caution due to difficult conditions, avalanches, and shorter days.

As emphasized by the Tatra National Park, several factors influenced the decision to extend the ban. One of them is the growing popularity of night trips to the Tatra Mountains, often undertaken by people without adequate preparation.

In addition, the New Year's Eve incidents in the mountains, which showed how risky nighttime activities in winter conditions can be, were also significant.
