The Hong Kong authorities have introduced new entry regulations for travellers arriving in, departing from, or transiting through Hong Kong. Refusing to unlock your electronic device when asked by the police could result in serious consequences.
Are you flying to Hong Kong soon or have a layover at Hong Kong Airport? You must be aware of the new, strict regulations! According to regulations introduced by the city authorities a few days ago (23 March), travellers are required to provide police with the passwords to their personal phones, computers and other electronic devices upon request, or to assist in decrypting them if they do not know the passwords.
Disclosing passwords to the police is mandatory for travellers to Hong Kong as well as for transit passengers. Consequences for non-cooperation? Refusal is a criminal offence. This can result in up to one year in prison and a fine of 100,000 Hong Kong dollars, and for deliberately misleading the police or obstructing their work – up to three years in prison and a fine of 500,000 Hong Kong dollars.
