The Indian city of Mumbai will soon have a second airport! Navi Mumbai International Airport will officially open on 17 April, with the first passenger flights taking off on 15 May.
The new airport is intended to help handle the growing air traffic in one of the world's most densely populated cities. Currently, the only international airport serving Mumbai is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which has been struggling with overcrowding for years. The construction of Navi Mumbai International Airport is a response to the needs of this rapidly growing metropolis. In the future, the airport will have four passenger terminals, which will allow for a more efficient service for millions of travellers.
After the opening ceremony on 17 April, the first domestic flights are scheduled to take off on 15 May. International flights will start in July. The new airport is set to become one of India's key transport hubs and an important point on the map of international flight connections.
