All trails leading to the summit of Japan's Mount Fuji will be charged 4,000 yen (€25) from the start of the new climbing season.
Last week, the Shizuoka prefectural government decided that all trails (including three within the prefecture: Fujinomiya, Gotemba and Subashiri) leading to the famous mountain, active volcano and highest peak of Japan, Fuji, will be subject to a fee. The tax will be 4,000 Japanese yen (approx. €25) and will be in effect during the new climbing season, which starts at the beginning of July and ends at the beginning of September. The introduction of taxes is intended to combat the excessive number of tourists on the trails and the associated trampling of the natural environment and ecosystem of the mountain, which is sacred to the Japanese.
