As early as 1 January 2025, tourists visiting the Maldives will have to pay double the tourist tax. ‘Green tax’, which was previously $6 per night per person, will increase to $12. This change will also include children over the age of two.
The decision to increase the tourist tax, known as the ‘green tax’, applies to larger resorts, hotels and guesthouses with more than 50 rooms. From the new year, the charge will be $12 for each night spent on the islands, instead of the previous $6. The tax, levied on each guest, aims to support green initiatives and sustainable tourism development in the Maldives.
The higher rates will also extend to children over the age of two, meaning that even families with young children need to factor in higher costs when planning a holiday to this paradise archipelago. The levy applies to all accommodation in establishments that meet the number of rooms criterion, meaning that the change will cover most popular destinations, including luxury resorts and larger hotels.
The Maldives, known for its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters, has been attracting tourists from all over the world for years. However, the tax increase may affect the perception of this destination as an affordable destination, especially for family trips.
