Madeira's government is introducing a fee for hiking trails on the island. To begin with, the amount of 3 euros will have to be paid to enter the 7 most popular trails, and after January 1, 2025, for more than 30 routes.
“The Island of Eternal Spring,” the incredibly popular Portuguese island of Madeira, is introducing new tourist fees. Until now, travelers could visit virtually all of the island's natural attractions for free. A few days ago, Madeira government announced that you will have to pay to enter most of the most important and popular tourist routes. The amount does not seem dizzyingly large, as it will be only 3 euros, however, when covering several to a dozen hiking routes on vacation, the expense will reach even more than 50 euros.
For the very beginning, the €3 fee has been introduced on 7 of the most important and popular tourist routes on the island: the Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, Levada do Risco, Levada do Caldeirão Verde, Balcões, Levada do Rei and Ponta de São Lourenço. After January 1, 2025, tickets will be introduced for more trails, covering a total of 30 hiking trails in Madeira under the fee system. On each of them, the ticket will cost €3 and will have to be paid by a person over the age of 12.
It will be the responsibility of tourists going out on the trail to purchase a ticket. The fine for its absence will be 50 euros. The purchase can be made before entering the trail or on the Simplifica mobile app. Free admission will remain maintained for Madeira residents only.
