Dubai is gearing up for another transportation revolution. The Roads and Transport Authority has unveiled a new project called Glydways, which aims to help solve the emirate’s traffic congestion problem using autonomous electric capsules.
Glydways will be a network of small, autonomous electric vehicles traveling along specially designated, narrow routes. This will allow the system to operate independently of standard traffic and avoid the traffic jams that have long been one of Dubai’s biggest transportation challenges.
The Glydways system is expected to transport over 10,000 people per hour in each direction, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h. Each autonomous capsule will accommodate four to six passengers and have a range of up to 250 kilometers.
The project is set to be implemented in four key locations in Dubai. The main planned route, 2.8 kilometers long, will connect the National Paints Metro Station with Bluewaters. The system is also set to be introduced in Madinat Jumeirah, Alserkal Avenue, Times Square Center, and Dubai Festival City.
