The Thai government has officially withdrawn its plans to introduce an entry tax for foreign tourists. The decision was made under pressure from foreign airlines and travel agencies.
The planned tourist tax would have charged 300 baht from people arriving in the country by air and 150 baht from tourists crossing the border by land or sea.
However, the Thai government has announced that it is withdrawing from this initiative. The decision was made after intense pressure from the tourism industry, which argued that the additional fees could discourage potential visitors and weaken Thailand's competitiveness against other Asian destinations.
The idea of introducing a tourist tax was not new. It was intended to increase budget revenues and finance the development of tourist infrastructure and environmental protection.
However, concerns about a potential decline in tourist numbers and difficulties in implementing the collection system meant that the project was once again shelved.
