Two European airlines, Air France and KLM, have decided to end free seat selection in the cheapest economy light class available. The changes will come into effect later in February.
It used to be a feature of low-cost airline travel to pay for seat selection. Unfortunately, over time, more and more classic airline companies have decided to introduce such a tax. Now, two major European carriers are joining the list of airlines with the need to pay for seat selection (don't pay, get a seat drawn).
Air France and KLM are introducing a seat selection tax for travellers on the cheapest available fare, economy light. If a passenger does not pay, they will get a random seat. The rules will apply regardless of the route chosen. The changes will come into effect on 11 February at Air France and 20 February at KLM. An important note is that airline operators will not be separating passengers travelling together. Even if a passenger chooses not to pay for seat selection and the system draws a seat for them, if seats are available next to each other, those on the booking will get seats next to each other.
