On 27 February 2026, Krakow Airport received a historic decision. The Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Krakow issued a positive environmental decision for the construction of a new runway for Krakow Airport.
The nearly 10-year process of seeking a positive environmental decision for the new runway at Krakow Airport has finally come to an end. On the morning of 27 February, Krakow Airport announced that the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Krakow had issued a positive environmental decision for the construction of the new runway. As the airport emphasises, it has not been an easy time. From the submission of the first report in 2017, through numerous appeals and proceedings before the Provincial Administrative Court and the Supreme Administrative Court, it has finally been successful.
What now? Krakow Airport is awaiting the resumption (from the Code of Administrative Procedure: commencement, quoting the airport's official website) of proceedings conducted by the Małopolska Provincial Office for the issuance of a ZRIL decision (Permit for the Implementation of an Investment in the Field of Public Use Airports). For Balice, this means that the design of the new runway must be updated and submitted to the Małopolska Province Governor.
