Tourist tax increase in Catalonia

Tourists visiting one of Spain's most popular regions will have to prepare for higher fees. The Catalan authorities have decided to significantly increase the tourist tax, which in some cases will double.

The biggest changes will affect the region's capital, Barcelona. In most cases, tourist fees in the city will double. Outside Barcelona, the increase will initially be lower, at around 50 percent, but tourists will still pay more than before.

According to estimates, the new regulations will significantly increase revenue from tourist tax. Annual revenue from this source is expected to increase from around €100 million to as much as €200 million.

The new law also gives the Barcelona city authorities greater freedom. The city council has been given the option to increase the local tourist surcharge from the current €4 to a maximum of €8 per night. The new rates are to come into force on April 1, 2026.
