Portofino introduces new regulations for tourists

The popular Italian town of Portofino, known for its picturesque views, luxury yachts and colourful houses, is introducing new rules for visitors. They are intended to ensure greater comfort for both residents and tourists.

From 15 July, regulations came into force in the historic centre of Portofino and around the port, which explicitly prohibit:

  • walking barefoot,
  • walking in swimwear outside beaches and official bathing areas.

This is a response to the behaviour of some tourists who strolled through the historic streets wearing only bikinis or swimming shorts, which caused discontent among the local community and did not fit in with the elegant image of the town.

However, this is not the end of the changes. The new regulations also prohibit the consumption of alcohol in public places, except for specially designated catering areas. In this way, the authorities want to reduce uncontrolled drinking on the streets, which often led to disturbances and littering.
