Hungarian airline Wizz Air intends to tighten controls on hand luggage dimensions. As reported by Fly4free, the carrier has sent an appeal to its staff to check passengers' luggage more frequently at all airports.
In a message to handling agents and its staff, Wizz Air stresses that many passengers do not respect the set size limits for hand luggage. The introduction of more frequent checks is intended to address this problem and at the same time be a way to maximise the airline's revenue.
One of the main objectives of tighter controls is to increase the number of fees charged for excess baggage. Wizz Air hopes that a stricter approach will encourage passengers to purchase additional checked-in baggage for fear of having to pay high fees at the airport. This practice is part of the strategy of many low-cost carriers, which derive a significant part of their revenue from additional fees.
Wizz Air reminds passengers to comply with the baggage size rules, which are clearly set out in the regulations. The airline also encourages passengers to purchase checked-in baggage in advance, which is a cheaper option than paying the excess baggage fee at the airport gate.
