According to Visit Italy, the authorities in Rome may introduce a €2 fee for visiting the Trevi Fountain as early as September.
If the new rules come into force, visitors will have to pay to access the platform at the Trevi Fountain. The ticket price would be €2 for everyone (except residents of Rome). After paying the fee, visitors would have 30 minutes to admire one of Rome's most important monuments and take the iconic photo, with a maximum of 400 people allowed on the platform at any one time. This means that during the high season (and most likely even during the low season), it will be necessary to book tickets for the Trevi Fountain in advance. Why might the Roman authorities decide to introduce a fee? The motivation is to regulate tourist traffic at the famous monument. The Trevi Fountain is visited by crowds of tourists, especially during the high season, and it is difficult to even set foot there without bumping into the crowd. The ticket system is intended to control tourist traffic and generate revenue for the maintenance of the monument.
