The Digital EU account on portal X shared the news that the European Union has begun negotiations with six Balkan countries on joining the ‘Roam Like at Home’ zone. What does this mean?

Let's start by explaining the context: what is the ‘Roam Like at Home’ zone? It is an EU project that allows you to use telephone services in the same way as in your own country when travelling within the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). This means no additional charges for calls and text messages, as well as large GB internet packages, which vary depending on the operator. Thanks to Roam Like at Home, tourists do not have to buy local SIM cards and avoid huge charges for accidentally turning on the internet abroad.

From 1 January 2026, Ukraine and Moldova joined Roam Like at Home. Now, the European Union has begun talks on the accession of six more countries to this zone: 🇦🇱 Albania, 🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina, 🇲🇪 Montenegro, 🇽🇰 Kosovo, 🇷🇸 Serbia and 🇲🇰 North Macedonia. The preferential conditions would come into force at the beginning of 2027, which would please many tourists not only from Poland but from all over Europe.
