ATM in Greece

From 11 August, ATM commissions will disappear from Greek banks, regardless of the type of payment card. This is great news for tourists going on holiday to Greece.

ATM commissions are one of the worst things that can happen to a tourist – you need extra cash, and the bank charges you a few euros for withdrawing it from an ATM. Fortunately, this is now a thing of the past in Greece. The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance has introduced new, groundbreaking regulations. From 11 August 2025, ATM withdrawal fees will be abolished at Greek banks. Throughout Greece, regardless of the payment card used by tourists (or residents), ATMs belonging to Greek banks will no longer charge commissions. If there is no Greek ATM in a town, and there is only one, then according to the new regulations, it will not be able to charge a commission (even if the ATM is owned by a foreign company).

The maximum commission at private ATMs will be 1.5 euros. There will also be no more taxes for checking your bank account balance. But what should you keep in mind? The fact that possible fees from your home banks will not disappear. For users of Revolut or other multi-currency cards, such as ZEN cards, there will be no commission (if you do not exceed the available withdrawal limit), but there may be taxes from the bank issuing the payment card. These may include unfavourable currency conversion or fees for foreign withdrawals and a percentage commission on foreign withdrawals.
