The capital of the Croatian island of Hvar, Hvar Town, will maintain noise restrictions during the summer season as it is extremely popular with tourists looking for a good time. The decision is intended to deter partygoers and encourage families with children.
Hvar is one of the most popular islands in Croatia and a favourite holiday destination for many thousands of tourists. Its capital, Hvar (of the same name), has been attracting tourists for many years, not only with its beautiful monuments, such as the Spanish Fortress and the Paklinski Islands, but also with its numerous restaurants, bars and clubs for partying. The city council has decided that it wants to move away from party tourism, which makes life difficult for residents in the summer months with late-night noise.
Last week, the Hvar city council voted in favour of noise restrictions, which set a maximum noise level of 85 decibels. This will have a significant impact on the island's capital, which is home to numerous clubs and outdoor restaurants. Business owners are protesting, while the Hvar authorities argue that the city needs to shift towards family-oriented tourism, not party tourism.
