An unusual phenomenon occurred in Ethiopia. The Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted for the first time in recorded history, spewing ash nearly 14 kilometers into the air. The eruption surprised scientists because, until November 2025, there had been no recorded activity from this volcano in the last 10,000 years.
The eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano is an event that immediately attracted the attention of geologists and seismic monitoring services. For the first time in thousands of years – and in fact for the first time in recorded history – the volcano began to emit huge amounts of ash. The dust plume rose about 13.7 km above the earth's surface, classifying the eruption as intense and potentially affecting air traffic and weather conditions.
According to observational data, the ash cloud began to move from Ethiopia over Yemen and Oman. Hayli Gubbi is located southeast of the Erta Ale volcanic range, within the Afar Rift, one of the most volcanically active areas on the African continent.
