Damascus Airport is back on the aviation map of the world. Qatar Airways has resumed flights
After years of suspended operations, Damascus Airport is reopening its doors to international air traffic. The first Qatar Airways aircraft departed from the airport on Tuesday, marking the Syrian capital's return to the world's aviation map.
Damascus Airport had been operating only on a limited basis for a long time due to the ongoing civil war in Syria. The complete suspension of operations came on 8 December 2024, when rebels took control of the capital.
Now that the Bashar al-Assad regime has ended and the political situation in the region has improved, the airport has resumed operations. The first international carrier to resume flights is Qatar Airways.
Qatar Airways returns to Syria after 14 years
Qatar Airways stopped flights to Damascus and Aleppo in 2011, when the civil war in Syria broke out. Now, after 13 years, the airline has resumed flights on the Doha-Damascus route. The first aircraft, an Airbus A320, landed at the capital's airport, inaugurating regular services.
Qatar Airways flights from Doha to Damascus will operate three times a week, offering passengers the opportunity to visit family or return to their homeland after years of separation.
