Belgium has become the first European Union country to ban the sale of e-cigarettes. The new legislation came into force on 1 January, putting Belgium at the forefront of efforts to curb the use of alternative forms of nicotine.
The ban on the sale of e-cigarettes in Belgium is an unprecedented step within the European Union. The Belgian authorities took the decision in response to growing concerns about the impact of e-cigarettes on public health, particularly among young people.
Decision-makers argue that e-cigarettes, although seen by some as a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, are still associated with serious health risks. The Belgian authorities also believe that the ban will help reduce young people's access to nicotine.
Belgium's decision sends a signal to other EU countries that may follow suit. The ban on e-cigarettes opens a new chapter in the European debate on the regulation of tobacco and nicotine products.
