The irresponsible behaviour of an intoxicated tourist forced the pilot of a Wizz Air plane to make an emergency landing in Athens. The woman, who was travelling from London Gatwick to Hurghada, caused a disturbance on board, which ultimately led to a two-hour delay in the flight.
According to eyewitnesses, the young British woman had been drinking alcohol during the flight. When the cabin crew refused to serve her any more drinks, the woman became aggressive and started arguing with the crew and other passengers. Despite attempts to calm the situation, her aggression did not subside, forcing the pilot to make the decision to make an emergency landing in Greece.
After landing in Athens, the woman was handed over to the Greek police and taken to a police station. She was released after the proceedings, but the consequences of her behaviour go much further. Wizz Air is demanding £15,000 in compensation from her for the losses incurred.
The incident shows how serious the consequences of irresponsible behaviour on board can be. Airlines are increasingly taking legal action against flight disrupters to discourage similar incidents in the future.
