The Thai government has decided to withdraw from the controversial regulations introduced a few days ago concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Why were the new regulations controversial and why was it decided to temporarily suspend them? Due to opposition from the tourism industry. The Thai authorities first banned the sale of alcoholic beverages between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., and then, after strong criticism from the tourism industry, the Thai government temporarily postponed this decision. According to Thai Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat, from 1 December 2025, sales will be allowed for the next six months, and after that period, the pilot programme banning the sale of alcohol in the afternoon may be resumed. Thailand decided to lift the ban not only because of criticism from the tourism sector, but also with a view to not reducing revenues for businesses during the holiday months and the high tourist season.
