The euro currency in Bulgaria

The European Central Bank has given Bulgaria the green light to join the eurozone. This means that from 1 January 2026, tourists will no longer pay with Bulgarian levs, but with euros for their holidays in Bulgaria.

Golden Sands and Sunny Beach are places that have long been associated with cheap seaside holidays. Prices in Bulgaria have been rising steadily for several years, but the real revolution will come next year. The European Central Bank has given the green light for Bulgaria to join the eurozone, which means that from 1 January 2026, the euro will be the official currency in Bulgaria. The euro will replace the Bulgarian lev, the currency that has been in use in Bulgaria since 1881.

What does the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria mean for tourists? It is not yet known. Time will tell whether we will see price increases or whether prices will remain at the same level. One advantage is that the euro is an easily accessible currency for Poles. There will be no need to look for a currency exchange office with Bulgarian levs or exchange euros for levs on the spot. However, it is important to remember that any outstanding Bulgarian levs should be exchanged in advance, before they lose their validity.
