From January 1, 2026, entrance to Spain's highest peak, the Teide volcano in Tenerife, will no longer be free. The island's authorities are introducing a so-called eco-tax, which aims to protect the delicate volcanic ecosystem of this unique area.
Mount Teide and the surrounding national park are one of the most visited places in Spain, attracting millions of tourists from all over the world every year. The Tenerife authorities emphasize that intense tourist traffic is beginning to have a negative impact on the volcano's natural environment, so the introduction of a fee is intended to help protect it and maintain the tourist infrastructure.
The new fee system will vary depending on place of residence and the route chosen:
Children under 14 and licensed mountain guides will be exempt from the fee.
