Chaos in the tourism industry – scheduled charter flights to the new Vlora Airport on the Albanian coast have been cancelled. The reason? Another delay in the official opening of the airport.
There is nothing a politician cannot promise. This was also the case this time, only the promise did not concern the construction of the airport itself, but the date of its opening. The official opening of the airport in Vlora, an Albanian resort on the Adriatic coast, has been postponed to an unspecified date. How does this relate to politicians' promises?
The Albanian government announced that in May, or June 2025 at the latest, the Vlora airport would be officially opened. There was even a first landing by Air Arabia. As it turned out, this was a ploy ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Albania. The ruling party in Albania, the Socialist Party and its prime minister Edi Rama, promised a functioning airport, but it turned out that the first landing was only part of the airport certification process. We will have to wait a little longer for the debut of Vlora Airport.
The delay in the opening of the airport in Vlora has caused chaos in the tourism industry. Some tour operators were selling trips to Albania with a landing at the new Vlora airport. The delay is disrupting travel agencies' plans and reducing the comfort of passengers, who will still have to put up with a two-hour transfer to Vlora from Tirana airport.
