Google has announced that it will make changes to the geographic names on Google Maps, complying with President Donald Trump's executive order. The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America, and Alaska's Denali Peak will revert to its former name of Mount McKinley.
The changes will be visible to users in the United States after an official update in the country's geographic name system. The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America, and the summit of Denali in Alaska will revert to its former name of Mount McKinley. MeW Mexico will continue to use the name Gulf of Mexico, while users outside the US and Mexico will see both names.
President Trump's decision has been met with mixed reactions. Some have criticized it as an unnecessary intrusion into established geographic naming, while others support the move to emphasize American identity.
Google stressed that it adjusts the geographic names in its services according to official government sources to provide users with the most up-to-date and accurate information.
