Bali, one of the world's most popular tourist islands, may soon introduce new and controversial entry rules for foreigners. The authorities of the Indonesian island are considering requiring tourists to disclose their bank account balances before crossing the border.
Under the proposed regulations, tourists would be required to provide information about their finances before entering Bali. Their savings for the last three months would be checked, and officials would also analyze how long the person plans to stay on the island. The regulations would apply to both those applying for an e-visa and those planning a longer stay.
The aim of the planned changes is to attract more affluent visitors who, according to local authorities, generate more revenue while placing less strain on infrastructure. The new regulations are also intended to help protect Bali's natural environment and local culture, which in recent years have been increasingly affected by mass tourism.
However, no minimum amount that tourists would have to have in their accounts has been specified at this stage, nor has it been determined who exactly would be responsible for verifying financial data. It is also unclear when the new regulations could come into force. The authorities emphasize that these are only proposals, which are still at the stage of analysis and consultation.
