After nearly two decades of strict rules, passengers travelling through US airports will no longer have to take off their shoes during security checks. The decision was announced on Tuesday by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Since the early 2000s, removing shoes has been standard procedure at US airports. It was introduced as part of tighter security measures. From now on, travellers will be able to pass through security with their shoes on, which will significantly reduce waiting times in queues.
The TSA emphasises that the decision is due to the introduction of modern scanning technologies that allow for effective detection of threats without the need to remove footwear. The new systems are designed to provide the same level of security while improving passenger comfort.
The change applies to all airports in the US and affects both domestic and international flights. For millions of passengers, this means the end of one of the most tedious parts of security checks – and a slightly calmer start to their journey.
