One of the world's most closed destinations is taking a step towards tourism. Turkmenistan, a country previously known for its extremely restrictive entry rules, has announced groundbreaking changes to its regulations for foreigners.
According to information provided by the Turkmen parliament, a new visa will replace the current complicated procedures, which required, among other things, an invitation from a citizen or a company operating in the country. Now, the entire process will be simplified to filling out an online form, which may be a real breakthrough for many potential travellers.
Although the exact date of entry into force of the new regulations has not yet been announced, the very fact of their adoption is a clear signal that Turkmenistan wants to open up to the world and tourism. The introduction of e-visas is an opportunity to increase tourist traffic and interest in this extremely exotic and little-known destination.
Turkmenistan has remained one of the least visited countries in the world for years, mainly due to difficult access and strict entry rules. Only a few thousand people visit it annually, which places it at the bottom of the global popularity ranking among travellers.
