The local administration on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria has introduced restrictions for tourists who want to climb the island's second highest peak, Roque Nublo. Prior registration will be necessary, and a maximum of 60 people per hour will be allowed to climb the mountain.
Are you planning a trip to the Canary Islands? If you are visiting Gran Canaria and the second highest peak on the island, Roque Nublo, is on your list of places to visit, please be aware of the new restrictions. Roque Nublo is the second highest peak on Gran Canaria, located in a mountain range in the centre of the island, and an extremely popular tourist destination. The 1,813-metre-high mountain has long struggled with overtourism. In order to protect the unique site and prevent it from being trampled by tourists, the local administration has now imposed restrictions.
From 3 February, access to the summit and the Roque Nublo trail will be limited to 60 people per hour. Before setting off on the trail, tourists will have to register online for a specific time slot. After registration, tourists will receive a special QR code entitling them to enter the trail. Each person can obtain 5 tickets, and the total maximum number of tickets per hour for all tourists is 60.
