The official currency in Dubai is the United Arab Emirates dirham (AED). The UAE dirham is the currency used throughout the United Arab Emirates. The dirham is divided into 100 fils, and the AED banknotes come in the following denominations: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. Since 2025, the dirham has had its own symbol, just like the dollar: it is the letter ‘d’ crossed by two horizontal lines.

The dollar is one of the most popular currencies in the world. It is the official currency of several countries, not only the USA, and a common means of payment in 15% of countries worldwide. It is a strong currency, often taken by tourists on holiday to exchange for foreign money or to pay locally. The dollar is not the official currency of the UAE, but can you use dollars in Dubai?
