The Polish government is planning to introduce a new tourist tax, which would apply to those using accommodation facilities in the country and beyond. Minister of Sport and Tourism Slawomir Nitras has announced that the new burden could come into effect from as early as 2026, which has caused considerable controversy in the tourism industry.
Under the new tourism tax, every person staying overnight in hotels, guesthouses or flats in Poland would have to pay an additional fee. The plan includes the development of mechanisms to account for the fees and the appointment of institutions to verify the standard of accommodation facilities. Although the details are still at the consultation stage, the project raises many emotions and questions in the industry.
The government is also considering the introduction of a tax for travellers who use travel agents when choosing overseas holidays. The Minister of Sport has indicated that he does not rule out subjecting trips organised by Polish travel agencies to an additional tax. According to the president of the Polish Chamber of Tourism, Paweł Niewiadomski, Poland would be the first country in the world to decide to tax its citizens travelling abroad.
The proposals for the new fees have sparked discussion about their impact on the domestic tourism market and travel agents. Polish entrepreneurs are concerned that additional taxes could scare off foreign tourists and burden travellers planning holidays abroad.
