58 instead of 49 euros - a monthly ticket for public and regional transportation in Germany will become more expensive, but will still provide travelers with a great deal for a low price.
German authorities have already officially decided to keep the already iconic monthly ticket for German railroads and, more specifically, for urban and regional transportation. This was announced jointly by the transport ministers of all German states. The form of the ticket will not change, while the price will change. Previously, citizens had to pay 49 euros for a monthly ticket. Now the increase will raise the price to 58 euros per ticket.
The monthly ticket for urban and regional transportation is intended to encourage Germans to actively use public transportation in favor of cars. Since its introduction, the ticket has become a real hit and is still very popular. So why the decision to increase it?
It all stems from the state's disagreement with the state governments. The central government didn't agree to subsidize the tickets in the amount the states expected. Hence the idea of an increase was voted down in the states. Of course, this is not the only reason, as it was difficult to maintain the same price year after year through inflation and rising labor and energy prices.
