A ban on smoking in open public spaces, including streets, will take effect in Milan from 1 January. The new legislation aims to protect public health and reduce the harmful effects of cigarette smoke on residents and visitors to the city.
Under the new regulations, smoking will be banned in all public areas such as streets, parks or squares from the beginning of 2025. The only exception will be places where a minimum distance of 10 metres from other people is possible. However, the regulations do not apply to electronic cigarettes, which have not been banned.
The Milan authorities stress that the main objective of the ban is to discourage habits that can be harmful to the health of both smokers and bystanders. The decision is part of the city's broader strategy to improve the quality of life of its residents and protect the environment.
Violators of the new regulations must expect financial consequences. Fines for smoking in public places range from €40 to €250. The municipality announces regular inspections to effectively enforce the new rules.
