At the end of January, Gdańsk Airport partially abandoned the idea of being a ‘silent airport’. There will not be a complete ban on voice announcements, and those that are allowed will only be heard at the departure gates.
In November 2024, the Gdańsk Airport announced that it was joining the so-called group of ‘silent airports’, i.e. airports where voice announcements are not heard over megaphones except in emergency situations. The decision was explained by the desire to provide passengers with comfort and peace at the airport from too many voice announcements.
As it turned out later, the Gdańsk airport's joining the silent airports caused a lot of controversy and criticism from Internet users. Many people emphasised that the total lack of voice announcements is bad for passengers and can cause delays or confusion. The airport listened to the travellers and partially reinstated the announcements from the loudspeakers: only possible three times for a selected flight, heard only at the gates and concerning the start of check-in, gate closure or a possible gate change.
