Egypt plans to introduce mandatory travel insurance

A proposal for mandatory travel insurance for foreign tourists has appeared in the Egyptian parliament. The changes would protect tourists without a proper health policy.

Hurghada, a popular Egyptian resort

According to the Wiadomości Turystyczne website, a project on mandatory travel insurance for every foreign tourist has been submitted to the Egyptian parliament. The author of the idea is Senator Hayama Farouk. The project has even recently been considered by Egypt's Senate Committee on Culture, Tourism and Antiquities. We don't know the details: we don't know how the process of buying mandatory tourist insurance would look like. Tourists could buy the policy on their own or it could be handled by travel agents. More details are likely to emerge in the coming weeks, but it is worth asking the most important question - where does this idea come from and why should tourists buy a mandatory travel insurance policy?

Mandatory insurance on a popular holiday destination?

The author of the idea and the politicians supporting the project argue ‘in favour’ by saying that mandatory travel insurance will protect tourists from unexpected costs in case of unforeseen health situations. Unfortunately, not all tourists take out travel insurance before their holidays, and some travel agencies provide very low amounts of personal accident insurance in their tour packages. If the idea passes through the Egyptian parliament, holidays in Egypt will become more expensive, but tourists will feel safer and not worry about extra charges in case of forced medical treatment on holiday.
