Cracow announces plans to build a metro. Construction to start in 2028
Cracow will be the second city in Poland to have a metro.
Cracow is entering a new stage in the development of urban transport. The city's authorities have announced plans to build a metro system, which is set to be only the second of its kind in Poland, after Warsaw.
After years of discussion and speculation, the project is finally taking real shape. Construction is expected to begin in 2028. ‘Cracow's residents have been expressing their desire to build a metro in the city for years,’ said Mayor Aleksander Miszalski at a press conference.
The city is ‘actively considering potential sources of funding’, including funds from the state, local budgets and private investors. It is also planning to raise funds from the European Union, which could significantly accelerate the project.
The first metro line is expected to connect Nowa Huta in the east of the city with Bronowice in the north-west, running through the Old Town. It is expected that the construction of the underground railway will relieve traffic congestion on the streets and contribute to a reduction in air pollution, which Cracow has been struggling with for years.
