Amsterdam struggles to cope with an excess of tourists
Amsterdam, one of Europe's most popular tourist cities, is tightening regulations to limit the impact of mass tourism on the lives of residents and the functioning of the city.
Amsterdam authorities had already banned the construction of new hotels to curb the growing number of tourists. The city, which attracts millions of visitors every year, believes that the excessive number of visitors negatively affects the quality of life of its residents. Now the authorities are looking at additional steps to further reduce the number of available beds.
One of the proposals being studied by the authorities is to move some of the coffeeshops to less crowded areas of the city. These establishments are very popular with tourists, which causes crowding and inconvenience in the centre of Amsterdam.
In a bid to combat excessive tourist traffic, the city is also considering reducing the opening hours of the city centre's coffeeshops and theatres. This area, which is one of Amsterdam's main tourist attractions, is particularly vulnerable to the effects of mass tourism, which is generating growing discontent among residents.
