The United Arab Emirates has introduced new regulations regarding the age for obtaining a driving licence. As early as 29 March 2025, under the new regulations, 17-year-olds will be able to legally obtain a driving licence for cars, which was previously only possible from the age of 18.
The UAE Press Office said that the government has introduced a new traffic law that unifies the age requirements for obtaining a driving licence for cars and motorbikes. Previously, young people could obtain a licence for motorbikes from the age of 17, but for cars only from the age of 18. The new regulations equalise this limit, so that both motorbikes and cars can be driven from the age of 17.
The new regulations have been met with enthusiasm by young people in the UAE, who can now plan to start travelling independently at an earlier age. With this decision, the UAE stands out in the region, becoming one of the few countries in the Middle East where 17-year-olds can obtain a driving licence. The change may encourage other countries to consider similar regulations and open the market to young drivers.
The introduction of the new traffic law is a step towards adapting regulations to the needs of young citizens, but also their road education. The new regulations assume that driving courses and driving tests will remain at a high level so that young drivers are properly prepared to participate in traffic.
