Pompeii is visited by millions of tourists from all over the world every year. This ancient city at the foot of Mount Vesuvius in Italy wants to protect its unique heritage and, to this end, will restrict tourist traffic.
Two thousand years after the destruction of the city by the destructive forces of the Vesuvius volcano, Pompeii is a hugely popular tourist attraction and one of the most visited tourist destinations in Italy. The ancient city near Naples is visited every year by hundreds of thousands of people curious to see what life was like there before it was covered by volcanic ash. Mass tourism contributes to the slow destruction of the historic architecture. Unreasonable tourists do not always know how to behave towards such an important UNESCO-listed monument. In order to protect their heritage, the local authorities introduce some restrictions.
The management of the archaeological park in the city of Pompeii is introducing restrictions on tourism. From 15 November 2024 every tourist entering the park will have to have a named ticket, and the number of tourists per day entering the park cannot exceed 20,000. The measures are aimed at reducing mass tourism and having greater control over the flow of visitors.
