Dubai is preparing to implement one of the most spectacular ecological projects in the world. The emirate's authorities have announced the construction of the world's largest artificial coral reef – Dubai Reefs. The project aims to support marine conservation and the development of ecotourism.
The planned reef will be a floating structure covering an area of 200 square kilometres, located off the coast of Dubai. The project combines research, educational, residential and tourist functions, and its main objective is to support biodiversity and restore marine ecosystems.
Dubai Reefs is set to become home to over 1 billion corals and 100 million mangrove trees, which will play a key role in absorbing carbon dioxide and protecting the coast from erosion. This initiative is part of global efforts to combat climate change.
In addition to its ecological significance, the project also has enormous tourist and educational potential. Dubai Reefs will include research centres, hotels, residential facilities and educational centres where both scientists and tourists will be able to learn about underwater life and the role of the seas in the planet's ecosystem.
