Azores to introduce tourist tax
In January 2025, the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, will introduce a tourist tax. The tax will be €2 per person per night.
The Autonomous Region of the Azores has decided to introduce a tourist tax due to the ever-increasing tourist traffic and the environmental risks associated with it . The Azores archipelago is made up of nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, administratively belonging to Portugal. This unique and beautiful place has been experiencing an increasing ‘tourist boom’ in recent years, hence the decision to introduce a mandatory tax on visitors.
Tourist tax in the Azores
The amount of the tax will be small by European standards: tourists will pay €2 per person per night, but will pay a maximum for three nights. This means that if you stay for a week, you will still pay the tax for a maximum of three days. Importantly, the tax will apply regardless of the standard of accommodation and only on the main and largest island in the archipelago, Sao Miguel.
