Wizz Air is taking another step towards intercontinental expansion. The carrier is analyzing the possibility of entering the transatlantic market, which may result in the launch of flights between Europe and the United States in the future.
Wizz Air UK has submitted an application to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for permission to operate charter flights between the UK and the US. Importantly, the carrier notes the possibility of later converting these flights into scheduled services if the project proves successful.
Wizz Air intends to base its strategy on the open skies agreement between the US and the UK, which regulates bilateral rights to provide air services after Brexit. This agreement gives airlines considerable flexibility in planning routes and flight frequencies, which significantly facilitates entry into the US market.
According to the plan, the airline initially wants to obtain approval to operate charter flights only, treating them as a test phase. Only in the next step would it be possible to launch permanent, regular transatlantic routes.
