Thailand plans to build six new domestic airports. The government hopes that these investments will help alleviate growing tourist traffic and improve access to less popular regions of the country.
Plans include new airports in the provinces of Phatthalung, Mukdahan, Phayao, Satun, and Kalasin. The investments are intended to support the development of regional tourism and relieve pressure on the country’s largest airports.
The most advanced project is the construction of an airport in Bueng Kan, located on the Mekong River near the border with Laos. The investment is estimated at approximately 8.1 billion baht, or about $230 million. If the schedule is maintained, construction of the airport will begin in 2029, and the airport is scheduled to open three years later.
