Krakow-Balice Airport has had an exceptionally busy year. Although the airport can boast many positive records, 2025 also saw a large number of diverted flights, mainly due to difficult weather conditions.
Krakow Airport has been growing rapidly in recent years. It has broken new records in terms of passenger numbers, and its network of connections is the most extensive among Polish regional airports. At the same time, the specific location of the airport in Balice near Krakow means that its daily operations can be difficult.
The number of diversions is primarily influenced by the terrain and meteorological conditions, as well as the fact that the airport is equipped with a low category 1 ILS system. During periods of dense fog, low cloud bases, or heavy precipitation, it is sometimes impossible for planes to land in Krakow.
In 2025, a total of 522 flights were diverted from Krakow solely due to bad weather conditions. Importantly, as many as half of them – 262 flights to be precise – took place in December, which is traditionally one of the most difficult months in terms of weather.
