The United Arab Emirates has officially left OPEC—the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The decision took effect on May 1 and could have serious consequences for global energy markets.
The UAE was one of OPEC’s founding members, which is why its departure is considered an event of great political and economic significance. The decision was announced amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
According to reports, the UAE criticized some Arab countries for failing to take sufficient action to protect the country from Iranian attacks. Oil producers in the Persian Gulf are already facing difficulties in exporting crude through the Strait of Hormuz, which remains one of the world’s key oil transport routes.
